Color words tracing worksheets

Eleven color words, one a page, to print and trace. Each page has the word large with numbered start dots and arrows on every letter, then rows of it in dots to trace on four-line guides, then lines to write it alone.

8.5" × 11", no sign-up. The rainbow comes first, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, then pink, brown, black, white and gray. The pages have no pictures, and the rows to trace are dotted grey, so a child can go over each word in its own crayon. If your readers spell it grey, type grey into the book maker instead: it takes any word.

Which letters the words practise

Between them, the 11 words use 18 of the 26 lowercase letters. The eight they leave out are f, j, m, q, s, v, x and z. To practise every letter, add fish, jacket, moon, quilt, sun, van, box and zeppelin to the words in the book maker: each has a picture, and each brings in one of the missing letters.

Tall letters and tails

On the four-line guides, seven lowercase letters rise to the headline: b, d, f, h, k, l and t. Five drop below the baseline: g, j, p, q and y. The other fourteen sit between the baseline and the dashed midline, apart from the dot on an i. None of these words stays between the baseline and the midline all the way. Eight of these words reach up to the headline: red (d), yellow (l), blue (b and l), purple (l), pink (k), brown (b), black (b, l and k) and white (h and t). Six of these words drop below the baseline: orange (g), yellow (y), green (g), purple (p), pink (p) and gray (g and y). Yellow, purple and pink do both.

The words by length and strokes

A stroke is one movement of the pencil, from putting it down to lifting it, and each letter on the page shows its strokes with numbered start dots. An i or j takes two: the line, then the dot. These words run from 3 to 7 strokes, 60 in all. Red is the shortest, three letters and three strokes; yellow and white take the most, 7 each.

Ordered by strokes instead, fewest first, the words go red, blue, green, brown, gray, orange, purple, pink, black, yellow and white. Words with the same count keep their order above. The biggest change is yellow: it has six letters but takes 7 strokes, as y takes two, so it moves from third to tenth. To make the book in that order, open Trace Press with the words by strokes.
