8.5" × 11", no sign-up. The words come in counting order, one to twenty. The pages have the words only, no digits and no pictures; to trace the digits themselves, there are number tracing worksheets 0 to 9 and number tracing worksheets with pictures.

Which letters the words practise

Between them, the twenty words use 16 of the 26 lowercase letters. The ten they leave out are a, b, c, d, j, k, m, p, q and z. To practise every letter, add apple, ball, cat, dog, jacket, key, moon, pig, quilt and zeppelin to the words in the book maker: each has a picture, and each brings in one of the missing letters.

Tall letters and tails

On the four-line guides, seven lowercase letters rise to the headline: b, d, f, h, k, l and t. Five drop below the baseline: g, j, p, q and y. The other fourteen sit between the baseline and the dashed midline, apart from the dot on an i. Four of these words stay between the baseline and the midline all the way: one, six, seven and nine. Sixteen of these words reach up to the headline: two (t), three (t and h), four (f), five (f), eight (h and t), ten (t), eleven (l), twelve (t and l), thirteen (t and h), fourteen (f and t), fifteen (f and t), sixteen (t), seventeen (t), eighteen (h and t), nineteen (t) and twenty (t). Three of these words drop below the baseline: eight (g), eighteen (g) and twenty (y). All three do both.

The words by length and strokes

A stroke is one movement of the pencil, from putting it down to lifting it, and each letter on the page shows its strokes with numbered start dots. An i or j takes two: the line, then the dot. These words run from 3 to 11 strokes, 144 in all. One is the shortest, three letters and three strokes; thirteen and fifteen take the most, 11 each.

Ordered by strokes instead, fewest first, the words go one, two, ten, four, six, seven, nine, three, five, eleven, eight, twelve, twenty, fourteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, thirteen and fifteen. Words with the same count keep their order above. The biggest change is thirteen: it has eight letters but takes 11 strokes, as t and i take two each, so it moves from thirteenth to nineteenth. To make the book in that order, open Trace Press with the words by strokes.
