Sight word matching game

Turn over two cards. If the words match, they stay up. If not, they turn back. Find every pair. Each card reads its word aloud as it turns. Play our word sets or type your own, and share the game as a link. It's free, with no sign-up, and works on a tablet, a phone or the classroom board, full screen.

Every game picks new words from the set. To play on the table instead, print the same game: twelve 2.5" cards to a sheet, with coloured backs.

How to play

For a younger child, start with 8 cards. Saying the word out loud before turning the card is good practice too.

A finished matching game: twelve white cards in pairs of short a words, edged in the short a green
A finished game: 12 cards from the short a set.

The word sets

Short a, e, i, o and u: twelve consonant-vowel-consonant words each, like cat, bed, pig, dog and bug. Dolch pre-primer (40 words) and Dolch primer (52 words): the first sight words children learn to read on sight, like the, and, see and said. The full lists are on the sight word flash cards page.

Your words: type up to 8 words of your own, like this week's spelling or sight words. Copy link gives an address that opens a game with those words, to send home or put on a class page. Playing them here is free.

The letters are the same school print letters as the printed cards and the sight word tracing workbook, with a single-storey a and g, the way children are taught to write them.

For the classroom

On a classroom board, press Full screen for the game alone, as big as the screen allows. The class can take turns, or play in two teams. The words are read by the voice built into the browser, so the sound depends on the device. Turn it off with the switch above. The same game also prints from the flash cards page, with matching coloured backs for double-sided printing, and the kindergarten worksheets page has the rest of the free sheets.
